Now it is time for Nintendo fans having some very good news:

QUOTE
Nintendo has announced the successor to the Wii, dubbed the "Wii U" and due in 2012 – this time the gimmick is a large screen in the controller, together with some much upgraded hardware. Screenshots:

The huge new controller has a variety of applications – it can be played as an oversized console tethered handheld, used as a normal controller with the screen providing a supplementary display, waved around as an oversized Wiimote, used as a tablet with a stylus or finger, or be employed in conjunction with (or replaced by) updated traditional Wiimotes.

The trailers:

Its spec in detail:

QUOTE

The new controller incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button controls, including two analog Circle Pads. This combination removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world.

The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.

Up to four Wii Remote™ (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers can be connected at once. The new console supports all Wii™ controllers and input devices, including the Nunchuk™ controller, Classic ControllerTM, Classic Controller ProTM and Wii Balance Board™.

The ungainliness of the new controller has already provoked some scepticism amongst Japanese observers…

Aside from the controller, Nintendo is describing the graphics as "HD" ("Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i") presumably meaning they will at least be on par with the PS3 or Xbox 360 (game preview imagery being what it is, comparisons at this stage are likely premature). Details on its exact specs are lacking.

Media is provided by a new 12cm proprietary disc format, with the console capable of reading Wii discs as well. SD memory cards and USB hard-disks are supported.

Looks a bit complicated to me, but if I get it I'm sure I'll warm up to it.

That controller is giving me flashbacks to my Sega Nomad. XD Also, gotta love Nintendo's nomenclature. New system? Meh, lets tack an extra letter onto it. tongue.gif
Still, gotta say I'm interested. Gimmicks aside, if they just up the graphics they can put out over what they have for the Wii, it will be sweet. And they're already making Tekken Tag Tourney Two for it, so that's one line-up game I can roll with.

(As I have been saying on various other forums for the last day or so) The controller is not all it could be. With it's large size, one would think it should be able to be it's own handeld console, like an engorged gaming tablet by nintendo. There was early scepticizm when it was first announced at E3 that it did not come with it's own console, and that it was rather a new upgraded controller for the original Wii (and the controller itself was called "Wii U"). Within a few hours, these myths dicipated of the controller being it's own system, with a picture of the console emerging on G4tv.com's website.

Wether or not this will compensate for Nintendo's rock bottom sales of the 3Ds in a year or so will have to wait to be seen.

According to the announcement performed by Nintendo, the controller is intended to be a handheld by its own. Therefore its uncommon size is quite understandable.

I understand it's initial use, I'm just saying it's a bit... counterproductive that it has to be within range of the console in order to operate at all.

I see no real issue here. It is intended to be used as a handheld, but it is still a controller. It seems reasonable that it will only operate at the range of the console. Besides Nintendo still have 3DS which has proven to be a very good platform (even though Nintendo may eventually want to consider a new platfrom to perform a strong opposition against Sony's Vita).
