Mighty No. 9, a game headed by one of the self-professed creators of Megaman (which is apparently debatable), Keiji Inafune, has become a magnet for controversy and derision. The Kickstarter, which was funded in September 2013, originally had a lot of fanfare thanks to promising to create the spiritual successor to Megaman after Capcom apparently signaled it wasn't going to make any new Megaman games (pretty sure that will be over soon).

However, that early promise would fade. Early on such stupid decisions were made such as hiring a whiny gajin SJW community manager who went as a far as blocking Kickstarter backers from the project because she discovered that they supported GamerGate on Twitter. The fall out from that stupidity got so bad that apparently the game lost a nice chunk of its $3,845,170 crowed-funded budget to bank charge-backs from angry backers who weren't given direct refunds.

Other disasters included the failure to secure budgets for follow up crowd funding campaigns for the game as well as one to produce a cartoon/anime even before the game was finished. Non-stop delays after pre-anoucned release dates having given the a game a vapoware-esque reputation.

Feedback in response to promos of the game has been extremely negative. Fans wanted a Mega Man clone, and it appears to be more about performing speed runs than the classic Mega Man game play. Let's not mention that the graphics are very meager:

Notice how his mouth, eyes and nose are just sprites and not actual polygons.

Or how crappy this fire/explosion looks (many comparing it to pizza or Cheetos):

However, nothing could prepare this train wreck of fail for the universal backlash against a very ill conceived trailer, one that seems like something out of the 90's EXTREME marketing phase. It went as far as to bash anime fans, the very people who backed the game and like Mega Man since Mega Man is a pretty anime-esque property. Check it out:

The ridicule for this abomination has been wide ranging and been reported even by major non-gaming news outlets like Forbes.

One of the best slams, however, was done by Sonic the Hedgehog's official twitter account:

The Angry Video Game Nerd also parodied the trailer to promote one of his own independently made games that went on sale recently on Steam:

The backlash, however, hasn't stayed in America. The CEO of the game's co-developer, Inti Creates, was also pissed off at the idiots at Deep Silver, who are developing the console/handheld versions of the game and commissioned the trailer:

Unforgivable indeed, Takuya Aizu.

Whatever the case, if this game actually ever comes out and isn't delayed forever, becoming another Duke Nukem Forever, the stupidity of those involved are likely to be remembered far more than the actual game itself. This should be a lesson that perhaps the capitalist model of not being paid until you are successful usually works best in regards to video games.

You don't seem biased at all, lol.

I've played the demo, and the gameplay is solid. The general feel of the gameplay, music, and characters feels pretty Mega Man to me.

As for the future of Mega Man, that new cartoon doesn't look like the brightest future.

As for Inafune's status as the creator of Mega Man...most call him the co-creator, as I recall he mostly finished what someone else started and kept him going, or something. I think even he refers to himself as co-creator, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I would be well-pleased if Inafune spent most of his time helping Capcom to bring a sequel to Megaman ZX Advent. Actually I would love to see a prequel for Megaman Zero, but... oh well... nevermind. >.<

So bad. The game could be much better if the pizza explosions were more pizza-esque. At least it would be funny. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the info. I grew playing MM since the first game on NES on through MMX on SNES.

Working for a very indie game company, I only wish we could get that kind of money for development.
It's a bit frustrating when people get that kind of money & do stuff like that.

We'll see though.

The roll out for Mighty No. 09's launch has been a bigger disaster than anticipated. Here's an over-view of some of the things that went wrong.

The game has been critically panned. With today's current rating metrics, anything below an 8 is considered bad, and this game has mostly been rated in the 5 and 6 range. One has to wonder if the game just sucks or that none of game's $4 million budget went towards bribing reviewers which video game journalism is notorious for. Since it doesn't seem to have gone towards the budget, perhaps that 4 million dollarydoos was spent on proverbial coke and hookers. Here's IGN's rating, which has gotten the most press thus far:

Those that wish to play the game, including backers of the Kickstarter, are unable to do so. The game was released to the media and retailers before Kickstater backers. People, including backers, received Steam keys, PSN codes, etc. that didn't work. The game has been delayed on Playstation Vita and Xbox 360 entirely (the met stretch goals included releasing it on every platform). Windows 10 detects the Mighty No. 09 files as a virus, and the game apparently crashes on the Wii U. Word of mouth suggests that the game is even "bricking" players' Wii-Us and Xbox Ones.

Videos and streams of the game's game play have been widely mocked for how unbalanced and poorly designed the game is. In particular, the final boss has been derided for being a simplistic Yellow Devil ripoff.

It includes some English references to obscure memes used to mock the game's critics, most specifically it being the "the present year" in the opening and a reference to "journalism ethics," meant to mock GamerGate despite the fact that the incident with Mighty No. 09's SJW community manager and forum mods who attacked backers over their criticisms happened well before GamerGate was even a thing.

And perhaps, the most infamous, during the game's lunch, a representative from Comcept read a statement from Infune where he described the finished game currently available as "better than nothing." You can read about it in this article:

This then lead to Mighty No. 09 being destroyed by a harsh Twitter slam again delivered by the official and verified Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account:

Quite a story; thanks for sharing.
Yeah, I'm not one to financially support a game til I buy the finished product (even Lab Zero w/Skullgirls & Indivisible).
The games I've worked on, though... they may be great & get little attention/sales.
Or the guy in charge never finished them- mellow.gif
Well, got to keep trying for now.
