Spy Girl Uprising: Nola
The sun’s rays shone down on the city skyscrapers of Beverly Hills, although the citizens of the bustling city would not see it. Of course, the citizens of Beverly Hills in the year of 2028 haven’t seen any real signs that they even have a sun watching over the planet. Smog of a thick, yellow variety floats above the skyscrapers, portraying how the future is never as bright as people seem to believe in their own little minds. Where glorious mansions and picturesque landscape dotted with hedges shaped like animals and swimming pools with Jacuzzis adjacent. All of that was taken away over time, as people began to change their ways and habits, mostly for the worst. The environment suffered from the overuse of vehicles of the future, which feed on gas like a hog at its trough. Roomy mansions with long driveways gave way to skyscrapers that were separated from busy roadway by a mere 5 feet of sidewalk. Of course, the sidewalk was jammed with commuters constantly, who couldn’t manage to drive in the clogged road systems, despite seven-lane interstates. A vast majority of town has become high-crime, filled with decaying shopping malls, warehouses, and a few operating boutiques selling hand-me down junk.
“I would like to keep my hair as is, just dash in some red highlights, would you?” said Nola, a Beverly Hills high school senior, tossing a hair magazine back onto its rack, where discount shampoo bottles laid unorganized. A typical teen of the times, Nola gets highlights put in to match her mother’s. It’s all the rage. Digging into her jade jumpsuit, she withdrew a silver card that caught a glint from the dirty lamp in the hair salon. Nola handed it to the woman who was cutting her hair and she took it before grabbing a bottle of red dye.
“Nolie!” a trendy punk girl, dressed a lot like Nola, shouted as she pulled open the door to the salon.
Nola’s vivid green eyes darted across the salon to the figure entering. “Hi Elesia!”
“You’re getting your highlights today?” Elesia said, running her slender fingers through her short, blonde hair accented with black. Without waiting for a response, she took a seat and grabbed a magazine.
“My moms have been acting real strange lately...” Nola began, but cut herself off.
“You mean Sam and Mandy? They can’t be any stranger than my moms!”
“It just seems like they are hiding something from me, or there is a surprise up their sleeves.”
“You’re getting too worked up over this… how about you work those new highlights in with some food.” Elesia smiled brightly, showing her not-so perfect smile. “We can go to Mai Thai and have spicy shrimp, my treat.”
“Sure, not like I have anything better to do today.”
After her highlights were finished, Nola gripped the handle to the salon door and yanked it open. Elesia chucked her magazine to the side, letting it slide recklessly to the dirty floor as she trotted out the door behind Nola.

“So, what was so strange about your parents?” Elesia baited to Nola.
“Oh nothing…”
“Come on, you can tell me,” she whispered as they walked down the sidewalk that looked normally like a highway for humans, yet today it was eerily quiet and serene.
“Well, I heard Sam saying something about joining “the organization” soon…” responded Nola, putting an extra emphasis on “the organization”.
Elesia’s eyes darted under their half-shut eyelids in a suspicious manner, however she remained silent until they reached the restaurant three blocks away.
The two ladies pulled the door to the restaurant open and took seats at a green and orange-leather booth with gaudy fake flowers sitting on the table. As Nola was reaching for a menu, Elesia reached out and grabbed Nola’s hand in hers.
“Once you’ve had some food and relaxation, I’m sure you’ll be fine.”
Nola broke away from her hand, irritated, but still happy she had Elesia as a friend.
As the two were sitting there, Elesia heard a faint wail in the distance. “Did you hear that Nolie?”
“I’m not sure… what did you hear?”
“I don’t know, but it sounded like… oh my god! Look out!”
Elesia grabbed Nola by her shirt and yanked her to the floor just as an earth-shattering explosion shook the walls of the restaurant. The glass façade of the restaurant window imploded and sent shards of glass sailing across the room, some of them striking Elesia on the back. Nola noticed that they had cut her, drawing blood. Flowerpots and plates crashed as they fell to the floor, knocked from their home on their shelves. A crack rippled through the ground, a decent-sized one at that.
“What was all that about?” Nola asked, standing up. Elesia trembled, but she also got to her feet, thankful that Nola was there for her.
“I don’t know for sure, but I saw a vehicle lose control that was headed this way, then it just exploded, I guess,” replied Elesia.
“I think I’m going to head home,” Nola told Elesia, and without hearing Elesia’s protest, she left.

Back at home, Nola sat in her egg-shaped chair. Her slender fingers slid under the rim of a chocolate box and lifted the lid off. Nola began devouring the chocolates, her absolute comfort food, all the while, listening to punk bands on her headset. Her mother, Mandy, was at work a couple blocks over. She was the head of a fashion line of clothing and accessories that were sold in every store in town. Nola’s other mother, Sam, was reading and studying in her private library, which was the last place to bother her in, so Nola kept herself entertained for the next few hours until Mandy’s shifty ended at her fashion corporation. The keyhole in the door turned and Mandy pushed the door open; Nola glanced over at her and gave her a nod of acknowledgement.
Mandy walked across the room and set her designer handbag down gently on a red-leather chair, before approaching Nola. “How were things today sweety?”
“Fine,” Nola responded, simply.
“Ok, then do you know anything about the explosion at the Mai Thai restaurant, hmm?”
“Nope… I was there, but neither Elesia nor I know what happened.” Nola looked at Mandy and smiled. “I love your hair like that.”
“Quit trying to butter me up, I want to know what happened.”
“So do I, it was just some freak accident I guess…”
Mandy looked like she understood and got to her feet, she then walked around the corner toward Sam’s library room.
Nola crept down the hall and flattened herself against the wall next to the doorframe that led into Sam’s sunny library room. She knew that Sam hated to be bothered in there, but Mandy and her were whispering in a serious tone that she rarely heard from them. Nola’s ears pricked when their mutterings included more talk of things like ‘organizations’, ‘spying’, and ‘Clover and Alex’. Clover and Alex? Who were they, some of Sam’s professors? And what about this organization? Spying? Nothing made sense to her. Mandy turned on her heel and left the room, she eyed Nola in the hall as she passed. Even though she said nothing, Nola could tell there were things that her mothers had been hiding from her for far too long.

Nola’s feet made no distinguished noise on the crowded city sidewalk in the morning as her and Elesia walked to their high school, Beverly High. It had been the high school that Nola’s parents had went to, but she thought about how even things like that might be a lie. She wished inside her head that she knew what they were acting so estranged about.
“My moms were acting weird again last night,” Nola started.
“What did they do?”
“Well I overheard them talking about someone named Clover and Alex…”
Elesia did not speak or look at Nola, but her eyes flashed. “Let’s hurry to school, I heard we have a Physics quiz.”
“Elesia! Wait!” Nola broke into a sprint after her.
Elesia sprinted faster; her feet carried her through the dense crowd at a surprisingly rapid pace. Behind her, a little ways off was Nola, who was struggling to keep up. The chase ended when an old man walked into Nola, stopping her in her tracks.
“Watch where you’re going bald dude!” she said, examining her arm for injuries. “You’re lucky I don’t have time for this…”
The old man grabbed Nola by the shoulder abruptly. Nola stared at him stunned, but after she came to her senses, she flung his wrinkly body off and into the street. He landed on his back with his appendages sprawled.
“Stop hurting that old man!” a woman’s voice said from behind. Nola whipped her head around to see a pair of ladies about her mom’s age. One had short blonde hair that was bright and she wore designer clothing, like Mandy, and the other had a sporty-edge to her fashion, including a baseball cap.
“Excuse me ‘Blondie?’” Nola snorted, getting to her feet.
Suddenly, the sidewalk opened up beneath Nola’s feet and she fell into black, dark space. She felt as if she would fall forever. ‘What in the world?’ she thought as her body plummeted down what seemed like a tunnel to the center of the Earth that ended with a thud on a red-leather bench. “WOOHP?” she questioned aloud, reading the sign on the desk before her.

The bald man was sitting behind the desk looking at her with a poker face. Glancing around the sleek office, she spotted the two ladies that she’d seen on her walk to school. “Who are you people?” she spoke, looking from one to the other.
“This is the World Organization of Human Protection, or WOOHP,” the elderly man spoke in a raspy voice. “I am Jerry, and these ladies are Clover and Alexandra.”
Nola nodded slightly, not sure whether to listen or to beat somebody up.
“We’re a spy organization, and it is now time for you to follow in your mother’s footsteps.”
“So this is what they’d been talking about…” muttered Nola.
“Excuse me?”
“Nothing” Nola responded, looking up.
An air door opened across the room, behind the sofa Nola was seated on, and Sam stepped in. Mandy was right behind her, trying to follow Sam without tripping in her high heels. They both took a seat by Nola.
“I know I should’ve told you before, but I thought that you’d rebel against that too,” Sam began. “This is important.”
“You kept this from me for so long… what else have you hid over the years?”
“Nothing, just this.”
Mandy took Nola’s hand. “The world is in terrible condition, it use to be better than this…” She motioned Sam to continue the story.
“You see, the villains have been multiplying and crime has spread out of WOOHP’s control since my girls and I retired. No one could effectively replace us. WOOHP tried using a team lead by our friend Britney as the replacement, but she got trapped in a burning building and was unable to get out.” Sam bit her lower lip, which was dry, and her eyes glassed for a moment. “We think you and Elesia are the right duo for WOOHP.”
“Elesia was in on this?” Nola was semi-stunned.
“Yes, she is the daughter of Clover and Alex,” smiled Sam. “And you are ours. You’ve both inherited traits from the best spy trio, and then some.”
“This is so much to take in…” Nola said, feeling lightheaded. Before she knew it, her eyes clouded and she lost feeling in her legs, and fell to the floor. Mandy’s hand on her arm was almost unnoticeable as she drifted into sleep.

1 Month Later
“Nola, over here!” Elesia called from up the mountain. Nola shielded the sun from her eyes with her hand and looked up toward her.
After reaching Elesia, Nola bent down and looked at the evidence.
“Good find Elesia, I’ll send this to Jerry,” she said while pulling out her XXX-Powder 3000.
“Is the mission about wrapped up then?” Elesia questioned.
“After we find that Dr. Gilee… Jerry says he’s been hiding out up here.”
“Well find him quick, I’m cold.”
Nola and Elesia hiked to the peak of the mountain and looked down the other side using high-powered futuristic binoculars.
“There’s a log cabin over there!” Nola exclaimed. “Let’s get him.”
“Freeze!” the two shouted, kicking the door in. Dr. Gilee smirked and got to his feet. However, he pulled out a laser and began blasting at them. They easily dodged, due to his mediocre aim.
“Ah, Nasty Nola has found me,” he grinned at her.
“You seem awful happy for a guy whose about to get blasted with my Photon Blaster.” Nola pulled a tiny gun about the side of a baby’s hand from her back pocket.
“You’re going to shoot me with that?” he laughed.
She smirked and flipped a small switch on the side. It enlarged to the size of a bazooka in about ten seconds, and was heavy enough that Nola strapped it to her shoulder. His laughter faded. Nola looked to the dial on the side and selected tickle, but just when she was about to shoot him, he blasted her with his laser. It didn’t hurt her, but she was ticked off now. She flipped it past stun and straight to kill, whilst aiming it right for his head…
Nola and Elesia shut the door to the cabin and walked out into the snow-covered valley. “That’s why you don’t mess with my temper.” The two teens hi-fived and activated their nuclear-powered jet helmets, rising into the sky at great speeds toward home. Looking back behind her, she saw the log cabin, with only the front wall standing, and the rest vaporized.
What a successful conclusion!

Just finished reading that and wanted to say great story, Metro! Your writing here is better than I expected. Keep it up and you'll be doing novels in the future I'm sure.

I agree with Laura, that the dystopian back-drop was a nice touch. I also liked the characterization so far and how you used what was in the official profile. Clover and Alex's daughter was also a nice swerve and a good choice for a "buddy" for Nola. XD

Only major flaw I can think of is that you needed more paragraph breaks, but maybe it just didn't copy over right from what ever you typed this on.

Definitely, hope to see more from you at some point.

I'll read Odd's story tomorrow hopefully.

Yeah, it didn't copy well from Microsoft Word  When I wrote it I also had it centered too, but not when I copied/pasted it here

Thx for enjoying it :)

I think maybe you should write new entries into your story of Nola. That would be cool. XD

I hope you do write some more, and like Odd said, it should be easier now that you've laid the groundwork for it. ^^

I'm considering writing a follow-up to this story

There's a very high chance that if written, the two spy girls will be joined by a gay dude ala David x Dean -- there needs to be some man on man to outweigh all the girl on girl
